Connecting a 9 Speed Chain
I'm upgrading my Cannondale M1000 from 7 to 9 speed. Not doing single track riding anymore so this has become my city/rural roads bike. Question to today is about my Shimano 9 Speed chain. I'm still emerging from the 7 speed era where chains were friction connected using the integral pins that came in the chain. My new chain for this project is a Shimano CN-HG93 and may have been sitting a while. It came sealed with open end links and nothing to connect them. Is it assumed that I supply the master link or break off pin? Is it still OK to connect using the integral pins of the chain?

Pretty sure the HG93 came with a joining pin but packaged separately from the chain itself.
Any brand of 9 speed sized quick connect will work just fine, however.

Proper quick link for 9 spd is labeled for 9 spd. No reason to worry about size. Amazon has a lot of choices,
some are $3-5 each others under $2 eg: https://www.amazon.com/Hotop-Bicycle...-11&th=1&psc=1
I have used no name quick connex for several chain sizes (8 thro 11) and had no problems with breakage. KMC is always reliable.
It is handy to have a quick connex in the tool bag just in case, though I have only used one once on a ride, but they weigh milligrams.
FWIW 9/10/11 spd chains should NOT be connected with the original rivet, it is guaranteed to fail.

Shimano generally packages two of their specific joining pins with each new chain, usually in a small separate bag. Some of their older chains had a partially inserted pin installed in one end of the new chain and you shortened the chain from the other end and then pushed the provided pin fully in to make the connection.

Thanks all. I'm up to speed now. The chain came from a friend. The connecting pin in its separate bag must have wandered.
