Is there a difference in shimano rd2400 / rd 2000

I need to replace a Claris 8 speed RD2400 after trashing one by hitting a stick of firewood; I can't seem to find detailed differences from the RD2000. I am using a KHS 223 with full Claris 3X8 and 35c Panaracer Tour tires as a gravel bike. Can I use the RD2000 and swap the 11/32 cassette to a 11/34 while I'm at it?

You can use just about any Shimano 8/9 speed RDER with some obscure exception(s).
Many people switch to a "mountain" RDER to handle larger cogs and/or triple chain rings.

That has been my understanding too but I presumed there had to be a difference between them. After after some more research I found the2400 has a max sprocket capacity of 32 while the newer RD2000 has a max cap of 34. Important in this case. Note my location.

If a 34t capacity is important, I’d look at a Deore 591 rd. I used to recommend looking for a nearly new XT 750 (eBay) but those are so expensive these days, even for beat up ones.

Of the 7 bikes we have every one has a mtb rear derailleur; from some era.

I finally discovered the rd 2000 has a cap of 34 and the original rd2400 is only 32. I managed to find both it and a 11-34 HG50 cassette new for $ 37 total.
