Googling provides the info that 531cs was a limited edition frame tube set used by Trek in 1984 et seq with 531 butted main frame and 501 tubing in the rear triangle.
531C (competition) versus 531st ("touring") were later introductions, the C version being lighter gage, the st slightly heavier for better attachments for brazeons for high end tourers. Both were butted.

According to my Reynolds sticker on my Trek 660 that used 531cs tubing it has 531 dble butted main frame and 531 stays and forks...the stays and forks are not butted but the 531c stays and forks were. The "CS" stood for "custom sport" which was a tad heavier then the 531c or sometimes called pro. When I bought my Trek in 84 the LBS offered me that frame or the Trek 760 which had the 531c tubing, but advised me to take the cs tubing because the c tubing had a rider weight limit of 175 or 180 pounds (can't remember now) and felt that even though my weight was only 155 that in the long run the cs tubing would last longer, especially the stays and forks, and provide more response and less bottom bracket flexing when hammering up California mountains which is where I lived at the time. I did test ride the 760 and when I hammered on it it did have noticeable flexing going on in the bottom end that wasn't as apparent on the 660; so at least that part of the LBS discussion I know is true.

The 1984 & 1985 TREK 620 had 531cs
TREK 720 had 531c
The frame geometry was the same and both had 47cm chainstays

From TREK in 1984:
Reynolds 531CS (Club Sport) frame tubing is first used by Trek.
According to Terry at Reynolds-Cycle.com: "531CS was a special set, supplied mainly to Trek. The main triangle was butted 531 and the rear stays were CrMo (501)." The fork was taper gauge CrMo (501). (Info. provided by Dickey Greer.)

Accroding to vintage-trek.com, the '84 720 had 531st main tubes and 531c fork & stays:
