Can a LBS easily replace a stripped frame threaded insert?
Just asking, both my pannier frame top mounting rivets, are stripped and it looks like its just the rivet inserted into the frame hole that's stripped. can my LBS easily replace those riv nuts?
|
That’ll depend on the LBS. They may be able to retap or they may need to braze in a new insert. The second option will definitely damage the paint.

Any chance you could give less information?

And it sounds like you have existing riv stripped nuts that you want removed and replaced? Depends upon frame material (I'm guessing AL or CF, right?) and if the rivnut is spinning in the frame, or if its just the screw spinning in the fixed rivnut. With care, rivnuts can be removed. So it depencs upon how skilled your lbs is. |
Rivnuts can be drilled out and replaced, provided that they are still secure and not spinning. The chances are almost 100% that the back side of the rivnut will fall into the frame tube and rattle around in there for the life of the frame.

Are the threads stripped or is the nut spinning in the tube?

Please explain the fix if the nut is spinning, just drill it out? If you try to drill it out it seems like the nut will spin with the drill. thanks

In the absence of the tool, it can also be done with a bolt a nut and a washer. |

If the threads in the nut are stripped, that's a lot harder to repair.

I wouldn't expect every LBS to be able to do all the same things. So you really need to ask them. Some may not even attempt to do anything, some may have more expensive solutions and others might have less expensive solutions.

The shop I work at could do it and I know plenty of mechanics who can do it but you would need to ask in your case. Head down to the local shop and see what they can do. You might also ask local frame builders and see if they can help out if no shops around. However without knowing much about the bike and what is going on it is hard to help beyond that.

Nope. If its in the seat stay, there is not likely to be a vent hole large enough to get the piece out of the frame.
