TREK MTB - 24 SPEED - Shimano gears - SLMS 10 - NExave derailler

ok so i noticed that my chain was slipping on a ride - tried to index, and alter the High and Low - after several hours of ill advised fiddling im now in a worse position!

now the cable tension is too slack on the rear derailler and i cant figure out the barrel adjuster (of which there is only one, at the actual trigger shifter)

im wondering if theres a more serious issue with the set up.

any advice and suggestions gratefully received!

Well, since no one here can actually see you bike it's hard to say for sure. Watch some YT videos (Art's Cyclery are great) and try to figure it out yourself. It's not a difficult concept once you know how it works. I'd start with undoing the cable from the derailleur, verifying limit screw adjustments, turning the barrel adjuster at the shifter all the way in and then attaching the cable. If you shift once and nothing happens you need more tension.

This is a good procedure for adjusting your rear derailleur: https://www.parktool.com/blog/repair...eur-adjustment Remember to set your derailleur and shifter to their most slack positions before attaching the shift wire. Please note that when you have set up your low and high limit screws leave them alone as they will not be needed to be re-set unless something changes like a different mech or cassette or the hanger gets bent or adjusted.

Why would you adjust limit screws for a bent hanger? Just align the hanger.

To get home from a ride, until a more permanent repair could be made, for example. Another reason would be installation of a different wheel set.

Obviously for a different rear wheel. If I were on a ride and my hanger got bent I'd try to bend it back before making large limit adjustments.

For the future, if a chain is slipping - staying put sideways, but disengaging from the teeth - this is generally NOT an adjustment issue. More likely to be a wear issue, chain and/or sprocket(s), chainring(s).
Adjustment issues are when the chain isn’t staying put or is in the wrong place sideways.

And you said ”Nexave”. That might be a low-normal (spring pulls the derailer towards the big sprockets) as opposed to the far more common ”high-normal”(spring pulls the derailer to the small sprocket).
Method for troubleshooting and adjustment is basically similar though.

Like others have said, you really need to start from step one: Disconnect the cable, set the limit screws, reconnect the cable, adjust the indexing. Pick a video that makes sense to you and follow each and every step starting at the beginning.
