This SR Maxima has a Suntour Superbe bottom bracket, 68mm x 116 spindle,

the cups are trashed, was thinking Shimano cups might be better as far as hardened races,

can i use Shimano cups with the same threads with the suntour spindle?

As long as everything else is for an Italian length spindle, it should work. Spec's are pretty well defined. Look at the attachment.

68mm x 116 might indicate a BSC bottom bracket is in order?

+1 this. The eBay cups referenced above are Italian thread. Double-check the current cups to be certain that is what you want. "1.37 x 24tpi" ≠ "36 x 24tpi"

Also, inspect the spindle for damage. It is quite rare for cups to wear out before the spindle.
