New chain, noisy only in small chainring
I didn't have any noise with the previous chain, but it was well stretched. New chain installed, I'm getting noise only in the smaller chainring on ALL gears. In the big ring, everything is fine & dandy. I don't suspect a worn cassette, no slippage from the gears. The only things I can think of:
- deep valleys, possibly a worn small chainring?
- chain not cut short enough? But it doesn't seem that the chain is folding up on itself.

#2- There shouldn't be any question of proper chain length, assuming you sized it by one of the several methods prior to installation.

tyrion is right. That chainring is shot. For now, you are lucky the chain even runs on it. (Keep riding and the chain will smooth out. But, all that means is that your near new chain is now worn, old and matches a very worn ring.)

Thanks for the speedy replies. Is your theory consistent with the fact that the previous (well worn) chain did not skip around on this chainring? I'm guessing "yes" but just checking. Well, I am proud of myself for wearing out a chainring! thank you again.

Yeah. Now when you replace the chainring, it is very likely that you will now hear that the cassette isn't what it should be. That previous chain with its stretch probably did the same to the cassette. (Of did you say you replaced it already? A bug of mine re: the forum - as I type a reply to a quote, I cannot seed the rest of the thread.)

Yes the small chain ring is shot. But then too often noise is just an indication that the chain needs to be oiled.

You shouldn't really be 'proud' you wore something out, it only means you didn't pay attention to chain wear enough.

One of these days I will post a photo of a well worn Campy ring.
