Chris King headset making noise

I just upgraded to a Chris King headset. I had installed by my lbs. I noticed today that when I turn the bars I hear a light creaking noise. It also makes a sound like there's a few grains of sand in the headset. Is it making these noises because the headset is new and need time to break in?

Dumb question... are you sure it's the headset and not cables?

Not dumb at all; SIS cables are really stiff and often make noise. Also wherever any cable contacts the frame.

Check all the cable ends as you turn the bars; a shot of cable lube will clear it up.

Duh!! Don't you think the cables were were the first things I checked. Thanks for the suggestion though Mr. Obvious. BTW there's no such thing as a dumb question. Didn't your 2nd grade teacher teach you that?

If you had started your post, "I just finished installing a new Chris King headset..." we might have assumed that you knew to check the cables first.

The only dumb question is the one you don't ask.

I had the same problem.

The head tube needs to be refaced so the headset can be reinstalled with absolutely parallel bearing cups/races.

Problem gone.
