San Diego Masi refurbish
1980 Masi Gran Criterium
Hi folks, new here. I have a 1980 Masi Gran Criterium that has been in storage for at least 20 years. Everything is in working order, couple of small scratches, one tiny rust spot, old glue on tires are shot. Who in the San Diego area can I trust to clean it up and make it rideable again? Thanks in advance!

By all means, have the hubs, headset and bottom bracket bearings thoroughly cleaned and regreased. It's almost certain the original grease has dried out to the point of uselessness by now. The brake blocks will most likely have age hardened and new ones will also be needed.

I always recommend learning to do your own work but this being an old Masi it's something special and maybe not the best bike to practice your learning skills on. I like Adams Ave. Bike Shop on, coincidently, Adams Ave. Adams Avenue Bicycles | Bike Shop | San Diego, CA (aabikes.net) I've never used their mechanics as I do my own work but have been impressed by their knowledge of older bikes and they seem to have the right tools needed which not all shops do.

^ That's super cool. I had family in Carlsbad back then, visited them there during that time period. I became intrigued with "California Masis" as a result. In recent years, I've been honored to become acquainted with one of the early workers in that factory, he's told me some amazing stories. We've worked on some of his (very collectable!) bikes at my shop.

JimiD , that looks to be a really sweet, classic bike, and in terrific shape. Very nice and good for you! I love classic frames, and I like them a lot with modern group sets. Many C&V fans do not agree, but that is what I prefer to ride, and my bikes are for riding. However, I am in the process of rebuilding a Fuji Ace that was gifted to me by a forum member, and I just may go with DT shifters and classic brake levers. I have 8 speed indexed Shimano DT and brake levers, and a triple crankset on hand. Also, this is one I may move on once it is finished and I get some miles on it.
Originally glossy black, but I am not sure what color I am going to finish with.
I kind of like the idea of semi gloss bluish gray.
Maybe just leave it with the primer and clear coat it.
