Dura-Ace upgrade

Hi Folks,

I'm running a Sora 9 Speed group and want to swap the 50/34 chainset for a 50/34 11 Speed Dura-Ace 9000. I don't want to swap any other parts unless I have to, which is my question really - do I have to?

I understand I might need an 11 speed chain but the rest should be ok?

Thanks,

ritfor

11spd chain probably wont mate well with a 9spd cassette as tooth and chain widths will clash. 9speed chain might fare better on the Dura-Ace chainset but the spacing will be off. It's an expensive problem to create for no reason.

You'll probably have to experiment with the chain. 9,10, or 11. You may find one that works, or not. This only makes sense if someone is giving you the crankset.

IMO, you are just creating problems and costs with pretty much no benefit. Even if the crank set is free,

I'm curious why you want to swap to a DA crankset? If it was free then just switch it over and go for a test ride with your current 9 sp chain. I don't see much advantage if you're going to spend $ to $$$$$$ to buy a new/used one though. DA will be a lighter, more durable chainrings and maybe slightly stiffer but not worth the investment if that's the only component you're replacing. If you do end up with the DA I don't see any problems with sticking with a 9 speed chain but you may, or maybe not, need to install some 1mm spacer shims (cheap and easy to find online or your LBS) between the chainrings to widen the spacing slightly.

If you do go ahead with this "upgrade" I expect a 10-speed chain will be the best compromise. It should be narrow enough to work with the 11-speed crank and will certainly work with a 9-speed cassette. I've used 10-speed chains with 8-speed cassettes with no problems.

I use 11 speed chainrings with a 9 speed chain for the last few years with absolutely no problems. Not Dura Ace mind you but FSA rings on a Sugino and SRAM crank arms. Now I am back to the 9 speed rings but not because of shifting performance.
