Sturmey Archer RXL-RD3 hub shifting issues.

Hi all, new member here, I'm seeking guidance on a Sturmey Archer RXL-RD3 hub with shifting issues.

That being said, the aforementioned hub is on a Margaritaville 26 inch women's cruiser bike.

I have had some experience with the old chain link style hubs, but this new one is stumping me.

I've adjusted to no slack, to where the arrow aligns between the two lines, as the manual states, and to full slack with the adjuster screw. No matter what I do, it only shifts into second and third, rarely into first if I pedal for a long time from second to first.

I can find no information on these newer style hubs and was hoping some of my fellow enthusiasts could help.

TIA

The RXL-RD3 is the same hub internally as the RX-RD3 just with a bigger drum brake. Have you tried setting it according to the manual?
The "no-slack" approach is for the old style hubs. These modern hubs need a certain amount of tension on the cable, even in third. Sounds like you simply need to move the cable anchor nut to give it more tension.

So (but open the manual for pictures which explain it a lot better):
  1. Shifter in 3rd
  2. Exposed cable length should be 140mm
  3. Move the rotary fulcrum lever pulley on the hub counterclockwise and install the cable anchor nut.
  4. Shifter in 2nd
  5. Adjust to the point where the yellow guideline and the yellow arrow on the hub line up
I have the 5-speed RXL-RD5 on a tandem and it shifts really well when properly adjusted.
