Rim Tape Width

how critical is the "correct" width?

for 7 years i've used 16 mm velox bought bulk. new season tape is packaged x 2 rolls and has a width guide on the back. evidently i need 19 mm.

is it worth missing my truing appointment to get wider tape? or is this my OCD kicking in?

thanks

After 7 years of no problems, I wouldn't sweat it. If it makes you feel better, buy the wider tape next time, but I don't think I'd be unmounting tires to replace the tape for this reason.

Too wide tape can make mounting the tire difficult. If you have no problems with the current width, there's no compelling reason to change it.

As long as the spoke holes (and any other gaps) are complete covered...and you can still mount the tire...you should be OK. If there are any small gaps left at the spoke holes...that’s where you’ll potentially run into problems.

Doesn't take much of a gap. The way it shows up is semi-frequent rim side inner tube punctures. Your new tube may puncture right away but it more likely will wait until you are 30 miles from home.
