Help with American standard BB, totally confused....

Iím re spraying my old jump bike and wanting to put new parts on it to freshen it up. Iv stripped the bike completely, re sprayed the base coat and Iv spent a good part of a week looking online for either parts or a whole new setup in regards to the bottom bracket.

Length on bottom bracket needed is 68mm,
width of bottom bracket is 56mm,(outer measurement not inner)
Itís a press fit frame.

The crank is 140mm long and has a front sprocket with 36T.

When looking Iv found you can get a press fit conversation that will change it from American standard to European standard but I have seen lost of crank sets that use enclosed Ball bearings so not sure if thatís what I need.

totally confused myself with it all and would really like some help with what I need to get going again.

as a new member I canít post photos until Iv made 10 posts but if anyone can help Iv got lots of photos I can send on other means if possible.

thank you for reading and I really hope someone can help.

regards

martin

Can you define exactly what you mean by the terms "American standard" and "European standard?"

The American, or Ashtabula, standard uses a 51.5mm cup pressed into the frame. It is seen on older Schwinnģ bicycles, some BMX bicycles, and various bikes at a lower price point. Another term for this system is the ďone-piece crankset.Ē
There are adaptors that can be used to downsize the large bore of the shell to use threaded English bottom brackets, as well as the BMX Mid and Spanish standards.

So, you've found the conversion kits from one-piece "Ashtabula" type cranks to three-piece cotterless cranks? Assuming you've managed to remove the one-piece crank (remove the pedals first, and the locknut on the non-drive side is a left hand thread, in case that has stymied you), something like the TruVativ adaptor should allow you to install any standard threaded cartridge or loose ball bottom bracket. Is your question what size cartridge or what length spindle to use? If so, that depends on the specific crank and chainring configuration you choose.

I had a 3 piece crank fitted, I had to drill out the crank arm screw to get it all apart. I am limited to what I can use as a bottom bracket with the current 3 piece set up/single crank arm.

the bike is totally stripped, sanded back to the bare metal, re sprayed black ready for a chromacoat Ďpeacockí spray, then 2-3 coats of top coat.
so Iv left the old press fit cups on to protect the inside of the bottom bracket during the spraying.

if I bought the conversion you mentioned above, what size threaded bottom bracket could I use?

my old crank is 140mm long, will I need a new bottom crank the same length?

I havenít bought anything yet in regards to crank set, but going for an all black theme. So Iím flexible to what crank arms and sprockets I buy to fit the NEW bottom bracket.

simply adding things to basket so I can spread the costs over the coming weeks/months.

The bottom bracket size is just confusing me. Donít want to go on a spending spree and buy the wrong parts.

almost at 10 posts so will upload photos when able.

It's probably best you locate the crank you want to be sure it is available.
