Replace Pump head
I have an old Nashbar Floor pump. The Presta part of the head leaks air. I would appreciate suggestions on what head to purchase. I really only need one for Presta.

I really dislike the big heads with the levers to clamp on the valve stem. Often the weight or force of the hose cants the head and it leaks or pops off.
What has worked best for me is the old standard Silca floor pump head, slide on, slide off. Point the valve stem down (top of the wheel) and let the hose drop toward the floor. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...231a09e6_b.jpgP1040755 on Flickr |
I've had success spraying a bit of silicon spray into the head whenever mine seems to be leaking a little. I think it rejuvenates the rubber grommet and plumps it up a bit. It might be just a temporary quick fix, but it works.

I bought this chuck from BikeNashbar eight or nine years ago to put on my old Zefal floor pump. UC that I linked to is out of them also.
https://www.universalcycles.com/imag...rge/106039.jpg https://www.universalcycles.com/shop...&category=4093 It was only 4 bucks then. And it worked much better than the one I had that is similar to what you show. Many seem to be out of decently priced decent chucks just like all the other bike stuff they are out of. So good luck finding anything but expensive good chucks or both cheap and expensive POS's. edit.... Oops, I was just getting ready for a ride and noticed that my current chuck isn't this exact one. But it's close enough in it's looks for either to be a knock-off of the other. |
If cost isn't a huge consideration and you want a presta-only pump head that will last a lifetime with nearly zero maintenance, splurge for the Hirame "Yoko" pump head. Amazon, among others, sells it: https://www.amazon.com/KUWAHARA-HIRA.../dp/B003EIIXSG. I have had one of these for 11 years, used nearly every day, and it still works perfectly.
Silca makes a nearly identical one but charges more. I used the original Silca brass head SJX426 illustrated for several years and found them a bit erratic. They worked well enough with a fresh gasket but tended to slip off the valve stem as they got a bit worn. |
↑↑↑ I agree with every point HillRider made, and I would add a little silicone grease will reduce friction and wear on the chuck seal and greatly extend the life of the seal on any head.

We try to keep the Topeak Twinhead Upgrade Kit in stock as it has a bunch of fittings and an effective chuck. Andy
