Campagnolo Ergopower shifter help please

Just acquired a bike the other day and it shifted fine when I tried it out.

Now the LEFT sti shifter does not engage. Its stuck on the large chainring.

when I push the lever to change moves fine, but does nothing to engage, move the FD.

Also, the cable is VERY taught. Tightest that I have ever seen.

There are adjusters on the downtube but cannot move them by hand.

The bike had been sitting for a while with no use.

Should I use a pair of pliers to loosen?

Should I loosen the cable by undoing the bolt so its completely loose?

Here are some pics.

Appreciate any and all help

The cable is probably too tight to release.

STI is a Shimano acronym. Those are Campagnolo Ergopower shifters, not sti. I would start by disconnecting the cables from the derailleurs and start from scratch to set them up

Thank you both for the help.

Even if the lever moves freely ?

I would think that the lever would be stuck if cable connected ????

I will follow your advice and loosen the cable ...start from scratch.
Thank you again

Campagnolo ergo power shifters😁😁😁

Sounds much better.

Thanks for correcting me🙂

Refer to your first pic-
IF the cable is too tight, the ratchet can't rotate far enough to release the pawl. It has to be able to rotate a "tiny" bit.
It appears you may also have a corrosion issue that could prevent parts from moving. IF something has to move from LIGHT spring pressure, it may be bound up.
I'm ignorant on "road" shifters and double ignorant on Campy as far as the actual mechanism/workings.
Maybe a flush with WD-40/real lube would help??

Campy Ergo levers are quite rebuildable, if parts can be found these days the work parts can be replaced. That's one beauty and hassle of them.

Cable adjusters can become corroded in their fittings, common with Al bikes and sweat. Hopefully the barrel will start to be able to be rotated with penetrating oil (not WD40) and some careful pliers action. I've broken off adjusting barrels before doing this so...

BTW do yourself a favor and try removing the cable head from the lever first. It looks to my eyes that a Shimano spec cable head in installed and being slightly larger in diameter then a Campy one often can get stuck in the lever. Not a good thing:) Andy

Thanks again for the great knowledge and replies!!
Update!!

The lever does not push all the way now. It stops about half way.

The FD does not move at all

The cable is still VERY tight .I think loosening the cable at the FD would be the way to start.

How would I remove the cable head if I do not loosen the cable first ???

I have never done this before so a step by step guide would be great if one is available.

Again...greatly appreciate the help

I would suggest loosening the anchor bolt, on the der, and try cycling through the lever's travel with your fingers holding the cable. Then try moving the der with your fingers. Do both seem to now function? If so then reattach the cable but with some cable slack and now tug on the cable with your hands to move the der. Does it move now?

This is pretty basic stuff, finding out how your stuff works. There are vids out there that show this stuff. Have you checked out the Park Blue Book yet? Andy

Thanks Andy

Will do

Thank you for your time and expertise!!

Really appreciate it !!!!!:)

Update!!!

I took to the bike shop and owner said it's the return that's an issue.

We cut the cable to see what the issue was

He does not know campy that well.

Looked up in the computer and there are like 28 parts to the shifter !!!!!

Any Campy experts know what part I need?

Is there such a thing as a "return spring" ?

Thanks again
