While riding my Axis today, I was hearing an intermittent "clank" at the same spot on the pedal strokes. It would sometimes continue for a dozen or so rotations, then stop. It only seemed to happen under light drivetrain loading. It sounded and felt like it was coming from the bottom bracket.

I was bummed... I figured something was broken or defective. The bike is only a month old and the LBS is 45 miles away.

I hadn't heard even a hint of this noise on earlier rides, so I started thinking about what I had done to the bike since the last ride. I remembered repositioning the rear wheel skewer's cam lever to a safer position and finding that the skewer seemed too loose. I tightened it a bit and repositioned the cam lever.

So, for the heck of it, I tried loosening the skewer a little. BINGO... no more noise. I hope by over-tightening the skewer I didn't do any damage to the freehub, which I assume was making the noise.

I just wanted to post this as another possible cause of mysterious bottom bracket noise a lot of folks ask about.

Good riding,
desmobob
