thanks all.
bought a different kid bike (used for cheap), with gears in the rear and thinner wheels.
Much better overall.
Gonna sell the old one

My experience with kids bikes with fixed gearing is that they are not usually well suited to climbing. Sounds like you found a better solution with multiple gears.
