Small dent in carbon top tube

Hi everyone,

I've just got my new Canyon Grizl and unfortunately notices some minor? issues with the carbon frame. I noticed 2 different issues which are:
  1. superficial scratches on the forks (caused during transport), which isn't big deal as there is a chance that they can be polished or in the worst case just varnished. Canyon admits that it's only a cosmetic defect, not affecting safaty.
  2. small dent on the top tube edge that worries me a lot more. The dent is really small, like 2-3 mm long and hardly visible at first glance. Yesterdat I prepared the top tube for tape wrapping and then felt the indentation under my finger. What I can say is it is definitely not a dent due to external damage. The varnish has no signs of damage.
Now questions:
  • are these types of small dents something that often happens in carbon frames? In my opinion, it is quite suspicious and may indicate a material defect, even before the painting process.
  • can such small issue cause some bigger frame damage in the future?
I'm attaching some pictures although unfortunatelly the dent is hardly visible even with bigger zoom. At the moment I am waiting for a response from Canyon. Regardless of the answer, I have the right to return the bike as it's still unused. The biggest problem is that waiting for a new bike is the next few months, so before I make a decision I decided to ask for your opinion.

Thanks in advance!

Probably just careless with cleaning the molds when laying it up or something. Not so much a structural issue. If you are willing to show everyone a pic with all that dust and maybe a fingerprint showing then I would not be worried about someone noticing that virtually unnoticeable to anyone that isn't the owner dent.

Smile, I'm poking you, not judging you!

I would add that the term dent is generally considered a result of an impact. yet the OP says it isn't. I suggest an anti OCD pill before riding. Andy

There seems to be some sort of gouge or imperfection above the cyan circle as well.

It is probably fine, but Canyon needs to address the "cosmetic" issues.

FWIW, Photos often make dust etc look worse.

Sounds like he won't be the first one.

They do have a 30 day return policy, but in reality, if it is a barely detectable blemish on a bike with a 6 month + waiting list (some of the Grizzles sold out in less than 4 hours), that isn't realistic.

Yep, I wouldn't return it for that either. Just depends on how obsessive the OP is and whether he wants a bike now or later.

Return it?

Better the devil you know than the devil you don't when it comes to bikes out of a box. Especially now. Who knows when it's replacement will arrive and/or will it arrive gorilla folded in half by shipping personnel? I don't like CF anything and I'd ride that bike all day long.

To be clear - I don't want to return the bike, but have it safe and secure.

As wrote above However, it seems to me that I have a right to expect that the bike is blemished, and as I wrote in the original post, it also came with scratched fork.
Thank you for your answers.

You definitely have a right to return it if you aren't happy. 30 days seems adequate to sort out how you feel about it.

Well you have to be pragmatic about your situation. Do you want to ride or do you want to obsess about things that are cosmetic and don't really matter and wait longer hoping the museum quality bike will be delivered to you?

As for the small dent. Carbon layup is a very manual process and small imperfections like this are not that uncommon. Just a bit unfortunate this one is in an obvious place to spot. I would flag it up with Canyon and see what they say about it. My feeling is that it's probably a benign cosmetic flaw. It could even be damage inside the mould, which would potentially mean a whole batch of these!

I don't get why are you assuming my cosmetic obsession again I had some concerns about the carbon structure which was reason of posting my question. Nevertheless, thank you for your opinion.

If you are truly concerned with the integrity of the bike, then you need to get it to someplace that does carbon fiber construction of bikes or repair of CF bikes and ask them.

I don't see in the pictures anything that will remotely make me worry for my safety. Realize there is more to assessing safety though than just looking at a picture. I can't touch it or see it at different angles. Nor do I know how it reacts when pushed on or other stuff.

In fairness, I think he was asking if it was merely cosmetic.

Uh, I did. I may well have misunderstood what you wrote, but phrases like "worries me a lot more" and "it is quite suspicious and may indicate a material defect" led me to interpret it the way that I did.

In any case, when Canyon was trying to assess a potential warranty issue (mountain bike chain stay crack that eventually led to a product recall), they had us take it to a bike shop mechanic to get it assessed at their expense, so it might be worth doing for peace of mind. (I would do that with your frame, even if you have to pay.)
