Which Shimano Bottom Bracket? BB-RS500 vs BBR60?
Completing a gravel bike build using a 105 level R7000 crankset. I may switch to a GRX crankset in the future (and swap to an appropriate FD as well). Shimano tech docs list the BB -RS500 as the bottom bracket for the GRX-600 11 speed, whereas the BBR60 is the listed BB for 105 R7000. The BBR60 costs just a bit more, but does that make it better? I thought I read somewhere the RS500 had larger and fewer bearings, whereas the BBR60 had more and smaller bearings. Although now seeing the RX-810 gravel crankset also lists the BBR60. I’m a little confused on this one.

The Shimano compatibility document shows that for a FC-R7000 crank you can use either a BB-RS500 or a SM-BBRS60. Of course this assumes your BB shell is threaded. And don't confuse the BB-RS500-PB which is press fit.
Get familiar with the Shimano compatibility documents that go back to way back when in their archives. And look at all the other documents too that they make available to anyone. Especially if you are going to select Shimano components to put on a bike. https://productinfo.shimano.com/#/co...453&acid=C-455 https://si.shimano.com/#/ As to whether one is better, I can't say. However I see nothing strange about two different items being made with different stuff and size parts and still arriving in a shape that will fit the same BB shell on a bike. |
I have both in use and can distinguish no difference.

The 500 is 105 level, the R60 is Ultegra level. You won't be able to tell a difference.

for a bit more money i would go bbr60. it is what shimano specs for ultegra

I just to the BB60 and installed new 105 r7000 on my WIlier from the FSA crankset and I was pleased with the BB60. I would go with that for sure it definitely is better than the FSA BB was. It spins very nicely and easy to install with correct tools. My Habby has a BB60 that is getting close to 35000 miles and over 5 years spins like a top.
