Cracked Seat Stay

Cracked upper seat tube stay on Fuji Gran Tourer SE I rode in Cino last week. This frame was blasted and powder coated about 10 years ago. Crack is recent. Have read as many posts on this as I can, seems a low end frame like this is not worth refluxing the joint. And at just over 200 pounds I am not keen on stressing this more. And not worth re-coating. Maybe learn to braze a joint on this old turd?

Sure this frame can be fixed with a few different methods/manors. But unless the work is free I serious suggest moving on ASAP, before the stay breaks lose all together.

The first fix I would consider, if the work is free, is to add a gusset between the stay and the seat tube. Andy

Agree with Andy. The design of that stay, with the contact point shrunk down, seems to be a triumph of aesthetics and marketing over good engineering practices. By the time you've ground the paint off, welded the break and gusset, and cleaned it up and painted it you probably can find a new (used), better frame for cheaper. Sorry...

Yep, this frame is now garage wall art. The good part, I have 2 Fuji S12S Ltd frames to replace it. Better frames and the joy of a new build.

Yes, there is something calming about building a bike up from the frame. Complex enough to completely absorb your attention, but not so mindlessly complex that your brain is frazzled. Great attitude, etherhuffer. Good luck.

I agree with this, but hadn't put it into words like this. Even newish tech - for me the last builds were hydraulic discs and electronic shifting - are zen enough to be fun.

Be glad you can do that. My spouse is a physical therapist. There is a wave of long-covid people coming. It's not "just like a mild flu", but for vaccinated people it seems that its much more mild.
Good luck!

Paxlovid! This stuff is a miracle. Glad I was vaccinated, this is one mean virus. I am an eye doc and we are already seeing people come in quite debilitated from long covid and a range of neurological issues. People have no idea the long term cost burden this is throwing on the health care professions and the country. The death and retirement of docs is also causing huge problems. If your wife has an interest in really good virology news, have her look up Daniel Griffin MD on This Week in Virology. I have followed TWiV for 2 years now. The virologists are harder to follow without a BS in Micro/Immu/Virology, but the clinical updates are far more clear than most public messaging. Podcasts or YouTube
