Hollowtech II question.

Hello, mechanics, can I ask a mechanical-type question here? 😁😉

My Soma Saga has had a Shimano FC-6603 triple crank on it, since before I bought it, around a year ago. The BB is worn out, and I bought a SM-BB52 (Deore for a MTB) for a good price on craigslist. Is this BB compatible?

I strongly suspect it is, but thought I'd ask here, before taking everything apart. 🙄😉

Thanks much for any help. 🙂

Why not go to the Shimano website, look up your crank and find out what BB it uses ?

Yes. Use your old plastic sleeve, the mtb Hollowtech bb sleeve that comes with the bb you purchased will be too long, designed for a 73mm shell instead of the 68mm shell on your frame. No biggie.

Thanks much, just wanted to hear it from someone with some experience. 🙂 I've messed with square tapers quite a bit, off & on, but this was my first encounter with Hollowtech II.

I have the proper Park tool, and a 28t ring that "might" fit where the 30t ring is now. Both were cheap, so I took a chance on the chainring. 😉

I don't post much on BF anymore, had second thoughts, deleted my post that you quoted, sorry.

And that was highly informative. Thanks much. 👍 It looks like I was lucky enough to mix things the right way, lol. 😁

Not a problem. I appreciate the good intentions.

If I were just replacing it with the same BB, wouldn't it be easier to just look at what's on there now? 🙄
Thanks for nothing. 👎

It was actually good advice, Shimano does a lot of compatibility charts to help us all out.

That BB is probably fine I can't see why it won't unless it is the wrong size like for a fat bike or something but you would probably know that.

Maybe I jumped the gun a little there, but I wasn't asking what came on my bike, like the above poster implied. I'm still touring, and on a phone, so spending hours browsing Shimano's puzzle pages isn't the solution I was looking for. 😉

I apologize if I was out of line, and thanks again, all, for the help. ✌️

While Shimano puts great documentation out there, they tend not to mix generations in those charts, especially if you might be jumping 2 generations. There are often newer items that won't be listed in the older component compatibility and the new item compatibility won't show it compatible with an older generation component, even though they are fully compatible. Like I can use any 9 speed RD on a 6s index system which isn't going to show up in any compatibility chart

Had you stated…. “I’m touring, stuck on phone, can somebody do the leg work please” you’d have got your answer and I’d bet really quick!
Too many turn up here and don’t wish to contribute to their solution, you got rolled in with those.

As with all (most) bike shops, those touring get priority

Shimano has made some changes on these over the last 16 years. The original Ultegra unit is no longer in production.
