such thing as a DIY spoke-wrench?
has anyone figured out a cheap or free way to tru their wheels without using an actual spoke nipple wrench? I had a nice parktool multi but it got lost, so i have nothing now, and no access to a bike tool coop. I am not about to send this piece of **** solid aluminum, janky 25 year old r. wheel into the shop, and i don't want to use needle nose vice grips (takes forever).
ANY IDEAS? i know there are some Dr.X-like gearheads out there who may have a suggestion. Thanks a lot.

any shop will carry a spoke wrench, they are in the range of 5 bucks...
things other than a spoke wrench have a nasty way of rounding out the nipples.

If you remove the tyre, tube and rim strip, you could just use a flat-head screwdriver. But yeah, spoke wrenches aren't expensive.

i'll use small adjustable pliers when a nipple's rounded off, but otherwise there's no reason not to fork over a few dollars for a quality spoke wrench to prevent said.

Also keep in mind that the flat screw driver is only good if the spoke does not take up that gap, which it very often does

yeah, i thought about taking the tire off, then i realized that the spokes would be sticking thru the nipple. ARGH! god damn it, why does this always happen when i leave the comfort of santa cruz, with its numerous tool co-ops....guess i'm going to the bike store tomarrow...

I guess you've already bought a spoke wrench, but...
In a pinch, you can use a castellated nut(like the kind that gets secured to a shaft by a cotter pin)with the right size slots. Works, but it ain't a spoke wrench.
