ST 6510 shift lever action
When pushing the black downshift lever, the silver upshift lever also moves in the same direction before there is shift activation. This seems to result a large movement being required to make a shift. Is this normal, or a sign of wear? Can the shifter be adjusted to reduce the lever movement required to make the shift?

Things get dirty. Try spraying some triflo in to flush and lube.

This is an internal issue, I believe a retaining spring has "gone bad". I've seen it on a number of STI levers of that era. Even with flushing and relubing (and doing this by removing the blade/pod from the body to soak in solvent) the primary (silver in this case) lever will still move with the secondary (release/black here) levers swing. Try holding the very end of the primary lever with one hand while moving the release lever and if that allows the previous shifting nature than you have what I am describing. The solution is a complete replacement lever/shift pod. Andy

Andy, Thanks for your reply, I believe you are correct. The black lever activates when the silver is held or when it is pushed far enough to exhaust the abnormal silver lever travel. Does anyone has a fix short of major internals replacement?
