Tourney TZ500 thumb shifters with road derailleur

Has anyone used one of these (right side) shifters with a road rear der?

And, has anyone removed the lever and used a lever from a different group? I have Exage 7 speed SIS downtube levers I wish to adapt.

Thanks,
DA

Should work fine with a road derailleur up to 10 speed (excluding Tiagra 4700), and a 7 speed cassette or freewheel. The lever can’t be swapped with your exage because it doesn’t have the same type of mount. You’d need something like a Paul thumbie for that.

I would not downgrade a shifter that much personally unless that was all that existed in current times but the mounting would be different. Tourney level stuff doesn't shift nicely at all and feels cheap so I generally avoid it. If I had an indexing issue I would just go friction and probably have improved shifting anyway.

Basically anything 9 speed and below for the most part is cross compatible so I have 7 and 8 speed derailleurs running a 9 speed drivetrain with 9 speed shifters just fine.
