not necessary a "big problem" - but this would be a case of "putting lipstick on a pig" if I were to spend silly-money

Update: Scored myself a pair of ST-1055 STI shifters for 55 € from my local bike-coop. Looks like I will be going down the indexed route after all. (left shifter doesn't properly shift though, so any advice on dissasembly/repair is greatly appreaciated)

i advise that you take it back to the shop and tell them to fix it for free since you paid about what those old brifters are worth in working condition...

not around these parts - 55 € is a steal. Plus, flushing it with WD40 brought them right back to life
