But why Shimano? Why now?

The GF has full M6000 on her hybrid. When I put it on the cassette options (for M6000) were 11-42 or 11-46. I had the 11-42 but there's some weird midrange gaps and looked off and on at getting her a 11-36. Shimano didn't make one. I'm AliEx'ing up some other parts and wanted to see what a Sunshine cassette was like. Out of curiosity I went to check the weight of the Shimano 11-42 just for curiosity. Turns out the only cassete now listed under M6000 is a 11-36.

They do some mysterious things but why release a new cassette under an older line?

Yes it would, you're not wrong. When I was looking into it popular opinion was SRAM or Sunshine for a 11-36, along with some disbelief that Shimano never did a 11-36. The post is a bit (maybe a lot) tongue in cheek that after people complaining that Shimano never had a 11-36, that they release it under an older groupset. OK it may part of other groupsets as well but why only show that one and remove the casettes that were originally part of that group?

This was intended as a joke because Shimano is "entertaining" with their fluid specs. When I put M8000 on my hybrid, the M8000 RD was not suitable for use with the M8000 groupset according to Shimano's specs..... I still went with it, turns out it works just fine.

There is a massive difference between an 11-42 and 11-36. I'm sure GF would prefer the former. Unless the 11-36 is being used with a triple, the bike will be overgeared. As most bikes are off the shelf. When we source our own parts we should try not to repeat industry mistakes. Weird gaps are not at all a bad thing, not enough of a low, like 22" low, that is worse IMO. Not preaching, just saying.
