Replacement for 9spd Altus derailleur?

My friend has a 1x9spd setup on an ebike with an Altus "mega 9" derailleur. Apparently it hasn't been shifting very well. A local shop suggested that the derailleur was worn out and that it should be replaced. I've never heard that before, this bike has less km on it than many of my bikes and I've never replaced a derailleur. But the Altus is cheap and maybe there are some plastic parts that have worn down.

Which shimano derailleur would she upgrade to? I think deore is now 10spd only.

If the bike is not that old I would suspect the mechanic more than derailleur wear. Rear derailleurs can last many thousand miles before wearing out as long as they are properly adjusted

Yes, I'm going to take a look at it first and see if I can't adjust. As well, I'd be inclined to check/replace a cable before the derailleur.

The Deore M591 (9 speed) is considered to be the least expensive Shimano RD that is reliable and fully functional. The various "A" groups may be marginally acceptable for light use but an inexperienced rider on an ebike can expose their deficiencies.

I'd suggest adding check the derailer hanger alignment, probably between tweak the adjustment and replacing the cable.

Alivio RD-M3100 is a lower budget "next step up".. nice with a lower price!

the Deore options have increased in price recently... RD-M592, or there are a few M591s around.. Two years ago, i was getting Deore 9 speed ders for 30 dollars, US.

all mentioned derailleurs allow larger low gears... up to 36 tooth, i believe.

Folks that can't DIY like this "female friend", I would also recommend the LBS to install a derailleur guard. They're not only for kids.
