Switching Out/Upgrading Parts

Any rules of thumb as to when various component should be replaced? I just switched out the RX100 rear derail on my 91 Peugeot Success, not because of any specific problem but because i figured performance could be improved after 14 years.
The smoothness & crispness of shifting of the new 105 derail really surprised me. Any other parts that might well be replaced? (crank was replaced for a triple about 6 years ago). Stock rims were replaced with Mavic Reflex SUP after a collision that also led to replacing the fork with a Sakae Litage FX.

Well... On the other hand, if you have a strong suspicion that something can be improved (like that derailer), may as well go for it.The only part that I replace REGULARLY is the chain. I replace it whenever it has elongated 1/2%, which greatly increases the life of the cassette and chainrings.

Thanks. I think any moving part that sees hard service is due for a replacement/upgrade after 10 years or less. I'm getting a front derail next. The original Weinmann wheels never stayed true for long but the Mavics hardly ever need trued.
Old parts may still work but a crisp new component or two can be like having a new bike only without the expense. Save the old parts to sell off when they become vintage.
