Skewer issues
My wife and I have a number of older road bikes with 130mm rear skewers. We have 3 of the green Kinetic stationary trainers. Some of our bikes have hooded dropouts, or protruding carbon, which makes connecting the trainer difficult. A typical steel trainer skewer doesn’t protrude out enough to protect the frame from the trainer’s mounting surface on most of our bikes. Years ago I ordered a special skewer part number KA048. It’s longer than normal and has 3/4” spacers that keep the trainer’s contact point well clear of the hooded dropouts. This skewer works great on any of our bikes but we only have one of them. Unfortunately, they aren’t available anymore. Any recommendations before I start down the road of trying to fabricate something similar? Thanks!

Look at skewers designed for bikes with 135mm spacing. You can add spacers for more clearance

I’ve thought about stacking washers to make a spacer but without the indented cutout I’m not sure it’s ok. |
Don't some tandem hubs have an extra wide spacing?
Google infers they do. |
I’ll research tandem skewer lengths. Might be a possibility to help with fabrication. Unbelievable that no one is making a basic training skewer with enough spacing to keep a traditional trainer away from a hooded dropout.

Ok, that’s an idea. Spacers should have an indented cutout in them, if they’re made like traditional skewers right? The KA048 trainer skewer even has the indented cutouts. I’m not exactly sure what the purpose of the cutout is anyway. It seems to hold the spring in place and possibly allows for clearance in case a hub housing protrudes past the dropout once tightened, I’m guessing.
I’ve thought about stacking washers to make a spacer but without the indented cutout I’m not sure it’s ok. As for the cutout, it's not needed if the axle doesn't extend beyond the dropout's face. The spring can be removed, it only helps to center the QR skewer for installation. |
I googled "indoor trainer rear wheel skewer" and a bunch of them came up. If you know the dimensions you need, they are out there, or....

Hehe, I’ve gotten the chicken skewer result a few times as well:) I can’t post a pic of what I’d like because I’m a newbie, but if you’re inclined, google KA048 skewer. It’s perfect, but it’s not being made anymore.
