I pulled Hollowtech cranks with a CCP-2 (non-Hollowtech) puller. Read how!
Hi, all.
I have one of the old-fashioned Park crank pullers, CCP-2, I think, for square BB spindles. The BB on my 2000 Cannondale R800 started making noise, and I needed a way to remove the 9-speed "Hollowtech" cranks. After a couple of dead ends, I figured out this successful procedure: 1. Remove crank bolt. 2. Remove plastic trim ring around crank bolt. 3. Reinsert crank bolt. 4. Disassemble crank puller. 5. Thread the outer part of the crank puller (the part without the handle) onto the crank arm, over the crank bolt. Voila! You have a "self-extracting" crank bolt. Turn the crank bolt counter-clockwise (as though to loosen it) with an allen key and it will press against the crank puller and push the crank off the spindle. You can put a wrench on the crank puller to give you an extra lever for loosening the crank bolt. |
^^^^.... Easier to just drop a proper size hex head bolt into the octalink spindle for the tool to push against.

I saw that tip when I searched the forums. But I didn't have the right size on hand, and I forgot to bring my bike the next time I was at the hardware store.
What's the proper size bolt? Do you really mean a hex head bolt or do you mean a socket head cap screw? |
