Clicking Noise

Where would I look to find the source of a clicking noise. It occurs once per revolution of the cranks and stops if I'm not pedaling or if I soft pedal. This is a recumbent bike but the drivetrain is the same as any other bike. I've checked for loose bolts and found none. I thought I found the source as the front thru-axle was a bit loose. Tightening that didn't help. I'm thinking bottom bracket but that's beyond my mechanic abilities to pull apart.

Check the front derailleur and it's cable.

Check if it happens when not in the seat. Check the pedals.

If the BB is beyond you, this seems like a bike shop thing.

Since it's a recumbent, getting out of the saddle might be difficult. Try lining up a crank with a frame member, alternately squeeze and pull apart, see if you can reproduce the noise or feel play in the BB.

I was stumped by a pedaling noise last year. I'm ashamed to admit I shot the parts cannon at it, replaced the BB and pedals, but it turned out to be a frame crack at a rear dropout.

Good thing you found the loose front axle. That could be bad.

If you're wearing shoes with shoelaces, make sure the plastic ends of the shoelaces aren't hitting something when you pedal.

Good call. A new pair of SPD pedals and I rode 55 miles today without any clicks. Thanks!

If they are Shimano or other decent pedals, you can probably clean, relube and adjust the old pedals. I had a click in one of my PD-a520 pedals. More of a click that was felt than heard. I too had ordered new PD-a520's. But later got the Shimano tool that let me disassemble them and all it needed was a little... very little, minute adjustment. And new lube of course. Some pedals don't require special tools for the spindle removal. Mine did.

Good luck pedaling out of the seat on a recumbent. 😀

Can't put a recumbent in the stand?

That's dumb.

I know that because it happened to me and brother still teases me about it 20 years later. My bottom bracket and pedals and hubs and headset needed to rebuilt anyway, I guess.
