Replacement Front Derailer Advice
 
Hello. I need to replace the frond derailleur on my brother's 2022 Trek DUAL SPORT 1 M BL bicycle as the High Limit Screw thread has cracked. The derailleur is a Shimano FD-TY710-2-TS3.

Bike Specs

2x8 Speed

Big Chainring : 46t

Little Chainring: 30t

Shifter : Shimano ST-EF500

Seat Tube : 34.9 mm

Pull : Bottom

What are some possible replacements? Anything with a better design?

I am currently thinking something like :

Microshift FD-T202

Shift pull ratios are different.

That model is bottom level, but you really don't need anything fancy. Friction shifting has the advantage of unlimited trim and let's face it. On a double, it's like flipping a switch. ON/OFF.

I would prefer to stick with the current index shifter if possible. How do you know that I need a mountain instead of road? I was never able to figure that out... Any suggestions for better models?

The higher level groups have more cogs which means thinner chains & DER's and more likely to rub in various combinations with the fatter 7/8 speed chain.
I'd stick with Altus or Accera or whatever they call that level now.

Yeah I realize the bike is most likey mountain, I was just trying to figure out why the part numbers and stuff don't tell me that/confirm that. The whole MTN vs road thing confuses me and everything seems poorly documented with crappy websites from most manufacturers.....

No need to be rude. Im just new to this. I know it is a mountain bike I just worded it differently to show that I wanted more certainty such as the part number somehow indicating mountain. I have researched, and I found were to purchase the original derailer from third parties (not shimano), but shipping is expensive so Id rather find a (better designed) alternative. I have been on shimano's website, but it is disorganized at best. I can find where to purchase new derailers (bike.shimano.com/products/components.disciplineLv1_mtb.categoryMidPLP_cg2MidDriveTrain.category3rdPLP_cg3SHICFrontDerailleur.c ategory4thPLP_cg4SHICFrontDerailleur.html), but I dont see anywhere to input old part numbers to get documentation.....

that derailleur should work fine for you.

when searching for specs, i enter the part number (MicroShift fd-t202) and the word "Specifications".
as with any search, you have to skip past the garbage and find a good page..
2x front ders for an mtb pull ratio are kinda scarce, btw... that trend was a short lived flash in the pan.
i'd grab that MicroShift der, and call it done.

The FD-T202 looks to be a viable option.

Shimano's current model seems to be the FD-TY606-L. It has the same specs as the 2x 710.

Both of these seems to be lower 'line-up' items, common for parts for 7/8 speed today. Don't know the quality at this level. Shimano is reducing their lower end offerings, moving more towards the Linksglide/Essa lines (for which information is still sparce).

The Microshift FD I selected for my 2X conversion is a 3X 9 speed, generally works fine, BUT, the spring tension is massive compared to other derailleurs, could not shift it with left grip shift, even left trigger shifter requires right hand with thumb in line with force. Shimano FDs have linkage that interferes with mounting on FD adaptor. Just be aware of spring tension. I found a used FD with a much softer spring and longer lever on the FD (unique to Shimano 11 speed I think), my plan is to mount that and do a double shift (1-3) for what would be a normal 1-2 shift, for greatly reduced shift force.

I'm surprised your FD cracked at the limit screw; Shimano stuff is usually fairly robust. My bike after conversion, I used Microshift triggers and they fell apart after a year. I replaced with gripshift on right and cheap shimano trigger on left for $5 from LBS used bin, both have worn great.

I ended up with a Microshift FD-M22 from my LBS. I do notice the spring tension is higher, but it seems manageable. I will find out once its fully installed. The Shimano seemed really poorly designed ngl. The limit screws sit on a weak shelf and the metal is really thin.

It is a tourney derailleur it is designed around price points not quality. Unfortunately while Shimano makes products like Dura Ace and XTR they also make stuff deep in the basement as well. It is sad but stuff like tourney is good money for them as they will make a lot of money in replacement and selling tons of the stuff for low initial cost bikes.

Hopefully the Microshift derailleur will work a little better but don't expect a ton. The bike was designed as a low initial cost bike which means a more expensive bike then you (or in this case your brother) paid just not all up front.

When looking at a new bike avoid anything below 9 speed and you will generally get an OK bike that is likely to give fewer issues.

The Shimano FDs look better designed, in that the linkage is in "double-shear", however this prevents it from mounting flat on my FD adaptor; I'm hoping to use a spacer or maybe just mount it higher. The Microshift instead is a cantilever linkage, not as good a design in that respect, but all aluminum cast parts. The one problem I had was the cable-fixing bolt coming loose. It had a thru-hole for threads, so I replaced with a longer bolt and put a thin nut on the backside to lock the bolt, just thin enough to clear when upshifting, works great. I'm glad I bought a triple FD (originally planned a triple crank), but even though went with compact double 50/34, I like the longer cage as the chain never drags, even when on small/small combo.

My rear derailleur is Shimano Tourney 6/7 speed, bought because it has a claw mount, my bike lacks normal RD mount, works perfect, vast improvement from the original Dahon RD, and a bargain at $13 new at the LBS.
