Bike fork question

Sorry I am only a bike rider and do not know the correct terms used for bike parts. The front wheel fork on my Surly LHT has some (quite large) movement when I use the front brake. Can someone explain what this is and what I need to do? Also, is it completely safe riding the bike while this problem exists?

Thanks.

i'll guess your headset is loose. are is your surly equipped with cantilever or v-brakes?

I would make sure your headset is adjusted properly and your stem is properly tightened after that. If you can rock the bike forwards and backwards while your brakes are engaged that is a sign your headset is not properly adjusted. It also could be a wheel that isn't properly installed either.

Is your front wheel securely attached? Do you wear a helmet? Andy

Cantilever.

Front wheel is on properly and is also new. When I stand beside the bike and pull on both brakes I can push the bike back and forth by several mm.

"make sure your headset is adjusted properly and your stem is properly tightened" sorry I cannot understand any of this. As I said, I only know how to ride. If someone can guess the cause of this movement, what should I search on YouTube to see a video on how to fix it? I know there are some good channels for bike maintenance.

Take it to your local bike shop and let them solve it. If you don't understand what I wrote I would question your repairs and don't want you getting hurt.

Well my reason for posting was to see if I can do this myself. There is only one bike shop I can use and unfortunately they specialise is selling mamachari, grandma bikes with no gears, so I only use this place as a last resort.

Try searching YouTube for "bicycle headset adjustment" and start with the most basic ones. Watch several before you try to do anything to your bike. Then come back here with questions about any parts of the process that you don't yet understand. It's not technically difficult, but it is vital to safety so one step at a time, to be sure you've got it. The bike is not safe as it is, so some adjustment needs to be done. The videos should help you confirm that this is indeed the problem.
