I'm fixing up a '90 Attitude. Should I be paranoid about the internal routing, or do these thread easily?

Others may have some horror stories, but I have only run into an issue with one frame (a vintage Raleigh Technium). I have some electrical background and like to first run thru a stiffer pull wire; once that is in place, I tape the inner cable onto it and pull it thru. The outer goes thru last. Generally a 5 minute job.

Depends on whether the customer is watching you try to thread that cable...:)

Are there intact cable sheathes still run through all the required frame ports?

I've pulled fishline through conduit with a vacuum cleaner before pulling Cat 6 through, but a frame that's had its cable sheaths removed? Maybe worth my local LBS's shop rate....

BEFORE removing the old inner cable, get some teflon housing liner and if possible slide it up said cable in reverse so you'll have something to thread the new cable back through. I have worked on a number of Kleins, their internal cable routing was not well thought out. Shops should charge double or triple for changing cables on these otherwise great machines.

Thanks for the tips guys, I've left the old cables in and will use some sheathing to run over the old cables before I pull them. Boy do I hate internal routing.

When I was working on my old Klein it wasn't mega terrible. I used some of the inner liner from the Jagwire Elite Link housing (which is a perfect substitute of that old stuff) and ran that through where it needed to be with the old cable and while it wasn't the easiest job it wasn't as bad as some internal routing jobs but I had the Park Tool IR kit.

Exactly this. It's a piece of cake when you do it right. New frames used to come with the liners already routed through for easy cable insertions. Only one time did I ever have to fish a new cable through without the liner, and that was indeed a challenge.

OP didn't ask, but there are some unique eyelets that go in those penetrations - make sure you don't lose them.
