He did that, it didn't work - see post #42
It'd be nice to be able to filter the thread for just OP posts. I don't always read the posts of others. Still, I would have liked to have taken a whack at it with my hammer and punch! |

I'm glad you took action and did something. However don't you think that drilling the head off of the bolt and then using a punch or something to hammer on the bolt shaft might have loosened the wedge and saved the stem to be used again?…..
1. Let the nearly stripped bolt head soak with penetrating oil and try manual and electric impact wrenches to loosen the draw bolt. Would not budge, draw bolt head now completely stripped. 2. Drill out draw bolt head, let soak with penetrating oil, and use approximately sized pin punch and small sledgehammer to free wedge. Would not budge after 2 days of periodic whacking. 3. Cut off stem, let wedge soak with penetrating oil, place a steel tube (which fit inside the stem and around the draw bolt shaft) directly on the wedge and hit the top of the steel tube with a small sledgehammer. Several strong whacks did the trick. |
Back in business. Yay! Thanks everyone for your comments and ideas, they really helped!

I tried 7mm and 1/4” which were too big. I tried a 7/32” which was too small. A 6mm allen wrench fits, but there is quite a bit of play. The draw bolt aperture was slightly buggered when I bought the bike from the original owner.
I did purchase a set of these bits which are made to facilitate removal of recalcitrant hex bolts. Fits nicely. I will give it a try with a manual impact wrench once I get a 3/8 to 1/4 adaptor. https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...bc801f97a.jpeg |

I'm in this jam too.
Except worse in that I am trying to pack the bike for shipping back to Canada (from France where a friend has been storing it for me for.... 11 years during) The bolt in the bar clamp is also seized (after 11 years in an attic I'm not surprised everything is seized) I too am fearfulof roundj g out the bolt head. I have soaked it overnight but only have 2 more days before my flight home Ugggh https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...54c10f9b85.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...2d3cccb9f0.jpg |
2 down, 1 to go.
Well, two down , one to go.
I got the seatpost bolt loose (and the seatpost out with minimal damage) AND I got the bar clamp bolt loose (first by whacking it with a hammer and metal rod and then using a good Allen key with an extension bar) All that remains is the actual stem binder bolt. And it is looking a bit rounded . And so might need to wait until I get home and have access to better tools. |

You can do that with the advanced search function.
But yes that is a way. <ctrl><f> together and just using the browser search function on the member name might be quicker. Originally I was thinking of a addition to the thread tools or in the side bar for each member that just required a single click to show only that members posts. Point taken though..... thanks! |
