Cassette hub help.
QUESTION 1:
Hi. I'm wanting upgrade a Mountain bike WHEEL (respoke it) from freewheel hub to a cassette hub. (DISC BRAKE BIKE) I want it to be Shimano. HG fitting. to fit a 7-speed cassette. I can use spacers if 7 speed not available. I will use a solid through axle but can convert a quick release hub. The hub axel can be 10mm or 12mm. I need to find a popular model. A mainstream model currently the most popular model that sells a lot. So that it... ...is low and well priced brand new. ...has many new spares being sold. ...has models being sold second hand. ...has spares being sold second hand. So my question is... Can anyone with current experience in the bike world at this moment in time suggest such a model? Replies appreciated. Thanks. |
Cassette hub help.
QUESTION 2:
Hi. I have drawn an arrow on the attached picture below pointing to the part in question. The part that locks together with the freehub cassette body to the spokes wheel hub. My question is... Is this part moulded with/into the centre hub. Or is it welded/fused on afterwards. Or maybe it is threaded on. There is no mention on diagrams as to whether it is a removable part or non-removable part of the centre hub. Maybe someone with experience of Shimano cassette hubs can answer this question. Replies appreciated. Thanks.https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...0ce92c6d69.jpg |

I think he means an adapter of some sort for a freewheel hub to make it compatible with a cassette freehub. These do not exist. Clearly in that exploded diagram the highlighted part, were it removeable, would be shown separately since that is the whole purpose of such diagrams. |

Finding a 7 speed Free Hub is getting to be difficult.
Do you know the difference? Freewheel or Cassette? You'll probably have to find an 8/9 speed hub and use a 4.5mm spacer to take up the extra space. https://www.thebikesmiths.com/produc...id=22445173423 There are several different mounting styles for Shimano Free Hubs. This is a FH-RM-30. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...a399938c57.jpg What's the drop out spacing? It varies depending on how old the bike is etc. |
In addition to replacing the hub or wheel to achieve this, you need to figure out whether you need a thru axle or quick release/bolt-on wheel. Almost certainly the latter if the bike currently has a 7 speed freewheel.
Easiest move is to just buy a new cassette wheel, and use the appropriate spacer for a 7 speed cassette (4.5mm if it’s an 8-10 speed freehub). |
you can not convert your frame to fit a thru-axle hub.
you can use a freehub quick release hub in place of your present freewheel hub. you can not convert a freewheel hub to a freehub/quick release type hub. any decent Co-Op shop in your area will have a suitable 7 speed wheel or 7 speed freehub type hub, if you can relace the rim and spokes onto that new hub. or they can swap the freehub type hub into your rim... if the flange diameter is similar, the spokes should be reusable, unless they are damaged... i'd look for a 7 sp.. used wheel in good condition... that will be the easiest and most economical way to proceed. as a Co-Op shop owner, i have several... i'd imagine your local Co-Op will be similarly stocked. you could also shop Ebay or Facebook Marketplace for a good used 7 sp. freehub type wheel... shipping a wheel can be cost prohibitive. .. Shop Local.. expect $20 to $50 for a good used wheel. measure your frame's rear Dropout inside width before ordering a wheel or hub. as to spares/other used models... the Shimano Parallax are fairly common, as are shimano acera. Shimano Alivio show up in great shape too. Shimano XT or XTR hubs turn up occasionally, but are far more expensive. my only personal 7sp. rolls on an Alivio rear hub and XT front hub. all of those mentioned hubs are easier to find in 135mm O.L.D. (the dropout width! you have measured that now, right???) There are not any 7 sp. freehub hubs being sold new, that i know of... an 8 sp. freehub hub will work as a 7sp. hub, if you add one spacer behind the 7sp. cassette. there are dozens of new shimano 8 sp. freehubs on most major bike e-shopping outlets. |
For some reason the moderator has merged my two post about completely different questions. the two threads should not be confused with one another.
so the two questions now merged are. -can someone suggest a hub like that? and -is that part on hubs removable? |

non removable. You need to replace the entire hub. Generally not worthwhile for 7 speed.

I think maddog answered question 1 - there are no 7spd freehubs being sold any more.
you are not going to be able to sever and weld / thread that piece onto an existing freewheel hub so question 2 is moot. |

You are asking the equivalent of "Can I upgrade my 4 cylinder engine by adding 2 more to get a V-6?" No. There is no practical way of making a freewheel hub body into a freehub body. Replacing the hub entirely is easier than any possible idea you might have. And it would still be largely pointless. |

I don't think you understand what a thru-axle is. Basically it's like the 5 mm skewer in a regular quick release but scaled up, typically 12 mm rear and 12, 15 or 20 mm front. It slides through a matching hole in the frame/fork (NDS on the rear hub) and threads into an insert on the other side. It may be tightened with an Allen key or may have an integral lever. So you can't fit a thru-axle to a frame/fork that was built for 9/10 mm threaded or QR axles. |
"I want a hub that doesn't exist and also has readily available and inexpensive parts, both new and used". Ignorance is indeed blizz.....

Shimano does still have 7 freehubs, FH-TY500 (rim) & TY505 (disc), with various widths & axle types. But, being a lower line part, not the best sealed unit. Finding something a little higher up in the line-up will give you better dust seals. Something used or recently discontinued may be available, possibly from the Deore groups. As mentioned, it will probably be 8/9/10 speed but can used for 7 w/spacers. Of the current products, the FH-T610 is an option. 135mm OLN, QR & rim brake. Other options are mostly disc brake now. |

You didn't mention if your bike uses rim or disc brakes.

pretty sure there's a Shimano Tourney disc hub... but i can't bring myself to recommend those. Formula and/or Joytech may have a couple too... once again, i won't reccy those. The Shimano FH-M756 might be to your liking too... and there are a few options with center lock disc mount too. run a search on Ebay (best Variety), determine which one you like, then shop/order it as you please, with a specific search in your chosen outlet or shop. this came up while researching availability of these hub options.... a complete wheel/hub assy, for a good price... Ebay search: Cannondale 26" Mavic MX 117 Shimano HUB FH M475 VIAM 8 -10 REAR Wheel Free Ship (7sp. adapter shim available separately. search: Shimano 8/9/10 to 7-Speed Cassette Conversion Spacer. ) plenty of options to investigate. |
