Bottom bracket problem?
Hello all,
I am encountering a strange problem that perhaps someone could quickly answer. Basically what is happening is that my cranks are "slipping" whenever I apply extra force (i.e. going up a hill). I have an old commuter bike which has a one piece crank. The reason I know this is that I took it apart, checked the cones, checked the bearings, repacked them with grease, placed them back on, tightened them, etc. Still, though, it will pedal ok if you are just coasting along, but whenever I hit a hill and correspondingly shift gears and apply that extra force on the cranks, the whole thing slips and I can get nowhere. Does this mean that I have to replace the bearings? Any advice would be appreciated!

I don't think your BB has anything to do with it. More likely it has something to do with your freewheel or chain, since the cranks are attached to the BB spindle and won't "slip."
Thanks for the quick response! I just want to clarify that when I turn the bike upside down to work on it, that I can hold the back wheel with one hand, turn the cranks with the other hand in the normal pedalling direction, and the whole crank system will turn when I apply a moderate amount of force. This shouldn't happen, obviously - it is as if there is no friction, etc. (It is a hard problem to explain, but I hope I can be clear enough). If it was a problem with the chain or the freewheel (do you mean the cassette on the back wheel) how could I check that properly? A new chain, perhaps? Is it possible to tighten a cassette, etc.? Thanks very much!

You have a one piece crank and the chainring is pressed onto the crank axle. I think there might be wear at the interface between the chainring and crank which allows it to slip. You will then have to get a new crank and chainring assembly

Thanks for your help guys. I am thinking now that something is definitely worn out. I have used this bike for extensive commuting and it is CHEAP. Oh well - time maybe for a new one cause parts would cost more than the bike....thanks again!
