Steerer tube length ?

I'm looking to replace the fork on my Schwinn Premis 53-54 cm? frame. It currently has a threaded fork I was wondering to replace it how close to the exact length do I need to buy the new fork? And short of removing the old fork is there anyway to guess or measure.

Thanks

Measuring from the fork crown to top of HS on the bike will get you close enough.A bit long is better than a bit short. Extra length within limits of threading can be taken up with spacers or cut off.
