Steerer tube Question

I have been riding with spacers above my stem in an attempt to dial in my handlebar height. I have decided the time has come to cut the steerer tube, but the problem is I need to sink the star nut further down the steerer tube to alow for the new shorter steerer length. I guess my question is how do I set the star nut further down in the steerer tube to allow me to cut the tube down to length.

mark your steer tube, then remove the forks. Take them to the nearest bike shop and they will cut the steer tube and set the star nut for only a couple of dollars. You can cut it your self but make sure it is straight, shops have a guide for cutting and a star nut installation tool. it will be worth the money to avoid later problems.

to bang your star nut deeper you could thread the bolt for it all the way in, then use a dowel rod as near to the i.d. of your steerer to set it deeper. be careful not to set it too deep. then I would use a tubing cutter to cut the steerer, and finish witha little filing.
