chainring jumping

you guys have probably answered this question a million times ....but i busted my butt yesterday and cannot figure out WHY it happened. I was coming from flat headed onto very very steep short hill as i shifted my chain jumped rings....i managed to stay upright on my bike but it hurt like the devil....when i collected myself and went to pedal i thought i had broken my chain.....nothing, it was like i had no chain..i got off and looked at my chain etc....everything was in place...except now on the the small chainring...i was on big ring.....what is up with this???....

yeah i'm a newbie....riding a mtb....but hey i'm riding )
