Freehub change out
 

Ok, I have a shot freehub on my Rolf Dolomite wheelset.
These are the Rolf Wheels made by Trek, and both Trek and Rolf admit no responsibility.
I have gone to three trek dealers in the city, and one in another town. All are suggesting I buy a new wheel.

My question is, will a different freehub fit this wheel?

It still is straight and true, I just don't see the point, I'm wondering if I can get a freehub body to fit, or replace the hub with a paired spoke Bontrager if the free hub won't work.

Any suggestions?

If it follows the Shimano standard once you remove the axle,the hollow bolt that holds the splined freehub on can be removed with a 10mm allen wrench. If it says Dura Ace it might take a special tool, never worked with one of them. Then take the freehub to the LBS and see if they have a good one like it.
Then again it might attach to the rest of the hub in its own unique way and I have just wasted you time.

Takes a 11mm allen wrench to remove, I'm being told it was Hugi who made the hub, no one seems to know for sure, and no one seems to know if the Bontrager free hubs made by Hugi use the same free hub.
But the sure do want to sell me a new Bontrager Race X light wheelset, even when nothing is wrong with the front.

Ha! That's because they buy them in bulk and want to get rid of stock rather than repair anything. The Bontagers are classics because they are made by Trek. If you are a Trek dealer, they will offer you them really cheap so the mark-up is as high as possible.

I'm no fan of being fobbed off. Take the wheel to a decent LBS and this won't happen.

I've taken it to every Trek dealer in the city.

No one else will work on them, they've said "no thanks, it's not a traditionally spoked wheel. We cant get parts. Go to Yadda yadda"

I think you are getting crap blown in youby Trek. Trek sold them under an agreement with Rolf, and the serviced them too. They know what the story is with the hub body,but since the arrangement with Rolf is dead they are just using that as a dodge to try and sell you a new wheel.If the hub really is a hugi, then the the better bontragers are still using the Huji hub and replacement bodies are touted as being availabe from bontrager. But it seems others have had trouble getting anything out of Bontrager. Also, Hugi hubs are common enough that a shop not populated by nose pickers ought to be able to deal with them.

The more that I learn about this stuff the better my Open Pro/Ultegra wheelset looks to me.

^^^.....what he said, along with DA or record/chorus hubs and even cxp33s or Velocity aeroheds...all good stuff and no mysteries. Even tho sydney does have set of Rolf Siestries and a set of Bontrager x lites with the Hugi hubs, he got into them cheap enough that if they go TU there won't be alot of crying over it.

Dang, buncha bike shops that only want to run the cash register and creditcard reader!

How mean! Maybe they should operate as a charity and fix everything at no charge.

It only goes up to 2003, but I hope that it will be enough to service the '04 hubs.
