MTB Front Derailleurs

FD's for mountain bikes are available in top swing or bottom swing varieties. How does one choose?

The swing being top or bottom is dependent on the application. the bottom swing units tend to allow larger chainring variations, while the top swing is more compact. (bottle cages and other mounted stuff).

Other factors apply, too; for instance, a seat tube ovalized at the BB juncture can prohibit the use of a top-swing unit.

Thanks. So do I understand that the top swing has a clamp that mounts lower on the seat tube?

Exactly.

I think these were designed for full-suspension MTBs with "interrupted" seat tubes.
