Shimano 11-28 Thread-on 7-speed Freewheel
Harris Cyclery is out of stock of this great 11-28 Shimano freewheel (below). I think it would go really well with my new compact crankset, and I can't find anything like it (and yes, I don't have a cassette-based hub).
Does anyone know where I can get one of these? I can't find it anywhere. Not Google, not ebay. I can't even find it on the Shimano web site... Has Shimano discontinued it?

I really wanted one of these too, but Harris listed it as out of stock "indefinitely" the week I was deciding whether to buy it or not. Like you, I couldn't find one anywhere on the net.
So instead I've ordered a Sunrace 13-30 7sp from Performance of all places. I decided on that one because it's the same net tooth difference, just starting from 13 instead of 11, and should be SIS compatible (considering moving to an indexed rear shifter and I know my old Suntour 6 sp freewheel would be a pain to get working that way). I haven't received it yet, so I have no further reports.

Drat - guess I should have ordered one when the getting was good too! Wanted one of these to go wth my 52/39 crank that I'm waiting to put on my new frame.

For a double, I would consider the 11-34 -- but then again I live in San Francisco where a granny gear is probably more useful than north Dallas.

There are still a lot of Shimano freewheels out there from Harris, Loose Screws, aebike, and ebay as well... I don't think it's so much that we desperately want freewheels as much as the good 17-tooth wide gearing; plus Sheldon raves (https://sheldonbrown.com/mega7/) about the design of Shimano's new Mega7 freewheel in terms of performance and reliability. Unfortunately the Mega7 design is currently only available in the 11-34 and the (late lamented) 11-28.

A freewheel with a 14 or 13 gear bottom is too big for me - with a compact crankset, I really need the 11. I already have a 14, in fact!
I like the 11-34 "MegaRange" option, actually. But I have reservations. For one thing, with a compact crank's smaller chainrings up front, I'm not sure I'll need the granny gear in the back anyway. But the main problem with the MegaRange is that, at least according to the Harris Cyclery page, I need a long-cage rear derailleur (which would be pretty dorky on an Italian road bike). Although I wonder if the requirement is really true if the MegaRange freewheel is used with a compact crank (my logic being that the chain length doesn't need to be as huge with the smaller front chainring(s))
Has anyone tried the 11-34 MegaRange with a compact crank and a normal-length real derailleur?
Sigh.

Highly doubt a normal length road derailleur will work with the 34. 28 is close, 30 is really pushing your luck - 34, well, you're going to need more than some black magic to make that work. I conquered a 9.5% hill on my first Metric Century with a 42/28 so I have faith that the 39/28 is likely as granny as I'll never need, then again my road bike does tip the scales at 30+lbs. I rarely use the 52/14 combo I've got so I guess I'll just work on getting stronger and faster before I complain about not being able to get an 11g freewheel.
