I know nothing about threadless headsets. What's a decent brand to get. Obviously Chris King will be mentioned, but this is a modest build-up with 9 speed 105 components. I only paid $100 for the NOS frame and fork.

What type of labor charge is reasonable to cut the steerer tube and install the headset?

Can I do this myself or this something I should leave to the shop? If it is not difficult what tools do I need?

Hi,

You can buy a 1" FSA Orbit X threadless headset from chucksbikes.com for $20. That's a good deal for a decent headset :) .

Cheers,
J.

Thanks. That looks like a great deal. Now How do I figure out what the races are? (I see they have 27.0 and 26.4).

Where is this measured? On the fork or the frame?

Fork crown race seat.

I did some searching and it looks like two different types: ISO (27.0) and JSO (26.4)

It's a kinesis carbon 3 fork if that helps.

Ever heard of a caliper? And your research sux...27.0 is JIS and 26.4 is ISO. The smart money would be on 26.4,but sydney likes calipers.

I would say that was unnecessary, but look who I'm talking too
