creaking crank

my crank is creaking when i pedal, the crank bolts are tight what could it be? i'm taking them off and reinstalling tomorrow to put a bash guard on, should i grease the spindle on the bb or cranks themselves, or crank bolts or anything when i put them back on? right now they're on with no grease, could this be my problem?

Are you 100% certain it's the crank? It could be in the general area (pedals, rings, ring bolts, BB, frame...). I've had noises that I could swear were coming from a certain component, that I eventually tracked down the source of at the opposite end of the bike

I was getting some creaking from my crank area, also.
I tightened down the bolts on the chain rings and it went away. Had to get them pretty snug for the creak to go away completely.
