New double crankset on old 6-speed - compatibility

My triple crankset has seen better days - I've worn down all three chainrings and she's looking pretty rough. So I've decided to buy a new(er) double crankset off eBay. I'm looking at older Shimano 600 and Dura Ace stuff. My bike is a 6-speed - will newer chainrings meant for 8 or 9 speed setups work? What kind of new chain should I look for - I don't see much for a 6-speed from Performance.

It works.A 103mm BB for the 8 speed DA crank can be hard to come by....A sram 8 speed chain also works for the older stuff and has a removaable link.

Cool, thanks! I'll be sure to keep BB axle length in mind while I'm shopping. I've got Sheldon Brown's BB sizing chart bookmarked.

You should have no real problems. I had a new 105 tripple (w/ new BB, of course) running with my Sun Tour 6-speed freewheel for awhile. It worked fine.

Until I decided that I wanted smaller increments between my gears...then I just HAD to get an 8-speed set up. I swear, I'm never going to 10!!

One more question -

Looking at Sheldon Brown's Bottom Bracket Size Database, some of the compatible BB lengths listed for the cranks are posted with two numbers, such as: 113 (115)

Example: Shimano 105-SC 1055

Does that mean either BB length will work with that particular crankset?

Thanks again! This board is a wealth of knowledge!
