I got a fairly good finish on aluminum by polishing it with scotchbrite pads and wd-40.

you can get some of the best finishes on aluminum, its actually one of the easiest metals to get a good finish.
Like another said, sand almost like your lapping. Then a bench grinder with rouge. WIth one wheel, apply the rough. Get the aluminum piece so that its almost black, then with another cotton wheel clean of rough, it will polish. YOu will see the difference, ive made stuff look like a mirror using this method
