Luckily my LBS stepped up..

On a MTB double, you will have essentially what is a "middle ring" for most mountain bikes, ie a ramped 32 or 34t ring, and then a 40/42/44t chainring. The ring you eliminate is the 22t "granny" gear. Anyways, all that aside, the smaller chainring can still be bent and ramp the chain into the larger chainring causing the chain to slip. Make sure you are spinning the cranks (drop the chain onto the bottom bracket shell so the cranks spin smoothly) when you check to see if the rings are bent--its the only way I can ever tell.

"Non-proprietary" in this case would mean a genuine Shimano hub that accepts genuine Shimano freehub bodies, cones, seals, etc.

So any brand that isn't Shimano is "proprietary"? I guess that 90% of the hubs out there are proprietary then.

In the context of mountain bikes made in recent years, Shimano's the de facto standard. You know that The point is, good luck finding a replacement freehub body for a Cannondale-rebadged hub from _________ (fill in name of some random hub maker that made CODA hubs in 1999). Also, prepare to dredge up some unorthodox tools to do the swap... ever seen a 17mm hex bit? Guess why I own one yeah. Not sure if the CODA ones use this, or the 14mm one, or some other one I've never seen before.

17mm S·K 1/2"-drive hex bit

OTOH, if it's a Shimano hub, then not only are they less prone to problems in my experience than the Shimano-alikes, but you can buy a new freehub body for it today, and will still be able to do so five years from now. The OP's local shop probably has one sitting in a drawer and could swap for the OP's questionable one. Today. Well, or tomorrow anyway

By proprietary I meant Cannondales own house brand of parts, you know, crappy brakes, stems, bars, posts, etc etc...
by putting this junk on their bikes they keep costs down and profits high.
for you and me it means costly upgrades.

personally my first Cannondale will be my last.

Not to be difficult, but I do work on Cannondales all day and can't say I really have any complaints about their house branded parts, all of which are made by reputable outside companies. I can't think of anything on a new Cannondale that would warrant a guaranteed "costly" upgrade, either really. The Tektro brakes they use are excellent, as are the Avids of course, bars and stems? Can't say I've ever seen any of them fail or "warrant" an upgrade. In fact, the thing I have replaced the most on a Cannondale out of the box is the Truvativ cranksets.

[QUOTE=seely]Not to be difficult,

No worries, I'm sure not everyone has gone through the same problems as me.

Effed up rear hub, causing a lot of damage. I didn't even mention a prior broken seatpost in my original reply.

I understand parts break(hell I've broken more Shimano stuff than I can recall) the thing that pissed me off was Cannondale's unwillingness to accept responsibilty for all the other parts that were destroyed because their Wind Ti rear hub failed, remember the bike had at most 20 hours of use.

retorically(sp) I know of at least 3 other guys who have had issues with misc C/Dale road and mountain parts.

I'm thankful my LBS stood up and although didn't "give" me the parts they supplied them at cost

I stand by my original statement, My first Cannondale will be my last.

FWIW the Lefty front suspension is the best XC fork I've ever used bar none.

Now don't get me started on Dual control levers.. LOL
