In need of new chain!

I have this older (2000) 7-speed Trek hybrid that needs a new chain. But I've looked on-line and I only see 8, 9, and 10-speed chains available.

Can I use an 8-speed chain? Will it make a difference? Can I alter it to become a 7-speed chain? I'd like one of those SRAM ones so I can take it off and clean it occassionally.

Thanks. I really appreciate your help.

Any 8-speed chain will work fine on a 7-speed drivetrain.

I'm using an Shimano IG-90 8-speed chain on an 1981 Schwinn Super Sport with the original Suntour 5-speed cluster, and SR Apex triple chain-rings. Works well, shifts beautifully!
