are the lx shifter cables replaceable, or do i need to get a new shifter. any advice would be appreciated of how to accomplish this. thanks

All shifter cables are replacable. Depending on the model shifter you have getting the old one out and the new one in may require removing a cover plate or similar to access the interior of the mechanism.

If you mean LX trigger shifters,then yes. The shifter has a plastic screw plug on it. Once you remove the plug you can pull the cable all the way out,then feed a new one thru. Jensonusa.com has Shimano cables for something like $1.50. I recently replaced both of mine.

Good advice. I disassembled mine then realized it had that plastic access screw.

Replacing cables should be easy and easier with a cable cutter (although standard wire cutters will work). Essentially, loosen the bolt at the deraillure and cut / remove the old cable. You'll have to push it through the access hole described by Ronin. Then, slip in the new cable thru the shifter and route it through the housing. Secure the cable to the deraillure with the bolt. Finally, cut the excess cable and crimp a cable end to prevent fraying.

You may want to lube the cable with a dry chain lube prior to routing it through the cable housing. Also, I dribble chain lube into the cable housing for added lubricity and to flush out debris. Also, take out as much slack in the cable before securing the cable to the der. You many have to do some minor adjustments to get the shifting crisp. There should be no need to adjust the limit screws on the der.

Before you remove the old cables, push the "release" levers (the downshift lever for the front der or the upshift lever for the rear derailleur, assuming it isn't rapid rise) several times (at least three in front or 8 or more times in back) to be sure it's in the most "relaxed" position. That aligns the cable head with the removal/replacement port and lets you snug the new cable in the derailleur's clamp bolt properly before you begin final adjustments.

Ronin - Thanks for saving me a bunch of aggravation - I found this with search as I'm using some scavenged Deore LX shifters on my wife's bike to upgrade her to 9 speed.
